Charlotte Hornets: 5 takeaways from 2017-18 NBA season

After another disappointing season, the Charlotte Hornets must make some substantial changes on a tight budget to avoid another losing campaign.

Despite employing one of the better point guards in the NBA, the Charlotte Hornets slogged their way through yet another frustrating year. Even though the teams’ numbers weren’t terrible, they finished 36-46 for the second straight season, finishing worse than their record suggested (42-40 Pythagorean record).

But even if you take their expected record at face value, they still wouldn’t have made the playoffs. For a team that has one of the higher payrolls in the league, that is unacceptable.

Apparently, the Hornets thought so too, firing general manager Rich Cho and then letting his replacement, Mitch Kupchak, clean house and fire head coach Steve Clifford and most of the coaching staff, training staff and analytics department. With these moves, Kupchak sent a clear message that the Hornets needed to start from scratch. He has a lot of work to do in order to turn this club around.

Thanks to their financial constraints, Hornets will have to get creative to improve the team this offseason. These are five things that Kupchak and the front office should consider trying this summer.
