Marc Gasol had an interesting 2017-18 season. Let’s look back on his year and what it means going forward.
Marc Gasol was very vocal about everything that happened during the 2017-18 NBA season.
When the Memphis Grizzlies were struggling through 60 games or so, they turned their focus to “player development.” This was never verbally stated by the team, but it was obvious in the actions. The rotations, the players resting and the tactics made it obvious.
Gasol, the team’s best player, was not amused:
"“It’s not about somebody playing well or getting your reps or developing players, because we have a league for that,” Gasol told the Commercial Appeal. “We have a league and a team here in Memphis to develop guys. This is a professional basketball league, this is the NBA, not the [G] League.”"
Gasol’s performance reflected his attitude. Frustrated and annoyed with the results on the court, the Spaniard’s effort dwindled, and so did his stats. His 17.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game are still a great stat line, but Gasol’s season goes far beyond that. Let’s take a closer look.
