5. Dennis Smith Jr. takes over the 2018 Slam Dunk Contest

The Dallas Mavericks didn’t have anyone selected to this year’s All-Star Game, but they did have rookie Dennis Smith Jr. take part in this year’s 2018 Verizon Slam Dunk Contest.

Smith entered this year’s dunk contest along with Larry Nance Jr. (formerly of the Los Angeles Lakers), rookie Donovan Mitchell (Utah Jazz) and Victor Oladipo (Indiana Pacers). He didn’t make the final round, but he did have arguably this year’s best dunk of the contest.

Smith’s athleticism was on full display as he wowed NBA fans old and new with his ability. His 360 between-the-legs dunk earned him a 50, although it didn’t get him into the final round. He didn’t win in the end, but some could argue that it’s due to the judging. We may need some more experienced judges to take on the responsibility.

For what it’s worth, Smith has already said he’s done with the Slam Dunk Contest. His biggest focus now is on winning and with good reason, the Dallas Mavericks only won 24 games in 2017-18.
