Memphis Grizzlies: 5 goals for the 2018 offseason
2. Find a coach
After firing David Fizdale in late November, general manager Chris Wallace promoted associate head coach J.B. Bickerstaff to interim status, putting him in a position he’s had experience in the past.
It was Bickerstaff who took over for former Houston Rockets head coach Kevin McHale after the Hall-of-Famer was fired only 11 games into the 2015-16 season.
Despite what the Grizzlies’ record would suggest, Bickerstaff is a quality coach in the league, with a wealth of experience, a coaching career that spans 16 seasons and a father in Bernie Bickerstaff who spent over 30 years on NBA sidelines.
Whether or not the Grizzlies front office feels that Bickerstaff is the coach for the future will come to light eventually, but if they feel like someone else should handle the coaching reins, they had better make that decision sooner rather than later.
With multiple teams including the New York Knicks, Milwaukee Bucks and Phoenix Suns all having attractive openings at head coach, potential candidates like Mark Jackson, David Fizdale (irony) and David Blatt could be scooped up quickly.
It’ll be up to Grizzlies management to do its homework in assessing who is the ideal coach to lead Memphis into this new age of basketball.
