Marcus Smart, like a lot of the other Boston Celtics players, has been a part of the injury report this season. It looks like a possible return may be soon for the guard, but what does this mean?

Marcus Smart has been sidelined a lot these last few months, both times because of hand injuries. The first injury was due to his emotions getting the best of him, which caused him to swipe a picture frame in the hotel and ended up cutting his hand open. That injury sidelined him for the next two weeks.

The newest injury occurred on March 11, against the Indiana Pacers. By diving for the ball, Smart injured his hand again, this time being a torn tendon in his right thumb. After undergoing surgery on March 16, it’s now being said that he’s eyeing a possible return.

ESPN staff writer Chris Forsberg, reported that he’s eyeing a return if there were a possible Game 7 against the Milwaukee Bucks. If the Celtics were to advance to the conference semifinals, it would be assumed that he would be returning sometime around then as well.

When going through shootaround before Game 1, Smart was able to get shots up and participate with his new splint in his shooting hand.

"“We’re on track for [a return in the] next three weeks, possibly Game 7 of the first round, [but] definitely second round,” Smart said. “So we’re on the right path.”"

Smart is arguably their best defensive player on the team. Getting him back would be a tremendous boost as he serves a big role on defense and with energy off the bench. He does all the little things you need to win, giving 110 percent, diving for 50-50 balls and making irrational confidence shots in close games.

More from Boston Celtics

Granted he’s not the best offensive weapon, but he certainly makes up for it defensively. This season he’s averaged 10.2 points, 4.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 0.4 blocks per game. To go along with that, he’s shooting 36.7 percent from the field and 30.1 percent from 3. He’s also posted a 99.4 defensive rating.

The Boston Celtics are already a top defensive team in the league and adding him would make them even better than they are now. Depth has proven to be one of Boston’s silent killers this season. It proved to be so even more in Game 1 on Sunday.

Brad Stevens only played four bench players, but only one saw more than 20 minutes. Marcus Morris logged 35 minutes and the next closest player was Shane Larkin with 16 minutes. Furthermore, the bench play was not good when they did play, with the exception of Morris.

With the injuries that Boston has been dealt this season, it’s been forced to put Aron Baynes and Terry Rozier with the starting lineup. If the Celtics weren’t short on the bench before, they sure are now.

Which is why adding Smart to the lineup is even more important. Boston has been good defensively without him, but adding him only improves it.

If Smart does indeed return for a possible Game 7 or the next series (if the Celtics advance), then Boston will be getting a lot more energy, toughness, defense and much-needed depth.
