New York Knicks: 5 candidates to replace Jeff Hornacek as head coach
1. Jerry Stackhouse
Finding a coach to grow with the team is something that should appeal to the Knicks. Their roster is getting younger and finding a coach that can connect to them is something the organization feels is important. Jerry Stackhouse would fit that bill.
Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported that Stackhouse is someone that the team will contact in regards to their job opening.
Like many jobs, being connected to a higher up helps. Stackhouse has that going for him, as he and Perry have a relationship from their time together with the Detroit Pistons. Stackhouse also has experience coaching, as he spent a year as an assistant with the Toronto Raptors before taking over their G League affiliate, the Raptors 905.
Stackhouse has been very successful during his G League stint. In his first season, he took home G League Coach of the Year, leading 905 to a division title. They were the best defensive team in the G League that season and took home the championship. The Raptors made it back to the championship this season but were defeated by the Austin Toros, the Spurs’€™ affiliate.
The understanding of today’s players and the complexities of today’€™s game is an area that Stackhouse should have a leg up on compared to other candidates. Coaching in the G League is not an easy thing to do, but Stackhouse has done well with the opportunity given to him.
It is anyone’s guess who the favorite for the Knicks job is right now, but Stackhouse checks off a lot of the boxes that Mills and Perry are looking for. He would be an excellent selection as long as he is afforded the chance to develop along with the youngsters on the roster.
