Kawhi Leonard a legitimate option for Lakers?

A new twist is added to the Kawhi Leonard-San Antonio Spurs saga every day, it seems.

There’s been speculation that teams are calling the Spurs to see what the asking price is for one of the NBA’s most dynamic talents as his injury absence continues to drag on. Potential landing spots have been speculated on. However, the speculation (maybe?) went a step further on Wednesday when the Portland Trail Blazers’ C.J. McCollum gave his two cents on the situation.

Now it’s probably safe to not read too far into McCollum’s comments. Chances are he’s about as in-the-know as we all are, simply connecting dots that may not be there. However, in the off chance he has insider information, it’s worth at least a quick discussion.

Let’s not pretend like NBA players don’t talk. Maybe McCollum didn’t even hear it from Leonard himself, but heard it secondhand from another friend who has his own inside sources. I just feel like the Blazers’ dynamic scorer wouldn’t make that type of statement without something to go off of.

He makes some fair points. Leonard is a Los Angeles native, and played his college ball a few hours south in San Diego. The Lakers could potentially have the cap space to sign another max-contract player in 2019 if they don’t land two superstars this offseason. I mean, I already mentioned him as a potential target if Magic turns his attention towards 2019 free agency.

In theory it makes perfect sense. McCollum’s comments only add more fuel to the fire. For now, though, we’ll have to wait and see if anything comes of this.
