David Stockton, son of legendary Utah Jazz point guard John Stockton, will reportedly suit up for the team his dad played with for 19 seasons.

For the first time since 2003, a Stockton will suit up for the Utah Jazz.

No, not that Stockton.

David Stockton, the son of legendary Utah point guard and NBA Hall of Famer John Stockton, reportedly signed a 10-day contract with the Jazz on Friday afternoon.

According to ESPN NBA reporter Adrian Wojnarowski, Stockon will join Utah on a 10-day contract after spending a bulk of his time in the G League.

The signing of the Stockton child obviously draws the attention of Jazz fans and NBA fans in general, with the uniqueness of getting the chance to put on the same jersey his dad John did during the course of his 19-year Hall of Fame career.

The signing also makes a lot of sense for Utah on the floor, especially given the current state of its point guard depth. It’s a cheap addition that is both temporary and buys time for the rest of the roster to get healthy after getting a little banged up as of late.

The Jazz, who are winners of eight straight and are one of the NBA’s hottest teams heading into Saturday’s game against the Sacramento Kings, are in need of help at the point guard position.

According to the team, two of Utah’s three point guards could be out against the Kings. Ricky Rubio (left knee contusion) is questionable, while Raul Neto (left wrist fracture) will be out for at least the next two weeks.

Dante Exum, the other point guard on the Jazz roster, made his season debut on Thursday after recovering from shoulder surgery.

That’s why a 10-day contract with a point guard, whether it’s Stockton or not, makes a lot of sense right now, and it could also draw more interest to Salt Lake City.

In the G League, Stockton has put together a nice season prior to making the — temporary, for now — jump to the NBA.

In 39 games with the G League’s Reno Bighorns this season, the 26-year-old guard has averaged 16.3 points, 5.2 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.8 steals in 28.2 minutes per game. Stockton also shoots the ball well, having shot 45 percent from the field, 40 percent from 3 and 86.4 percent from the free throw line this season.

Stockton also comes to Utah with some — although minimal — NBA experience on his resume. During the 2014-15 season, Stockton appeared in three games for Sacramento, having averaged 2.7 points, 3.0 assists, 0.7 rebounds and 0.7 steals in 11 minutes per game.

The point guard will join the Jazz while they are playing their best basketball of the season. Utah enters Saturday’s contest having won 18 of its last 20 games and sitting tied with the San Antonio Spurs for the seventh seed in the Western Conference standings.

The Jazz are currently one game behind the Minnesota Timberwolves and the No. 5 seed and two games back of the Oklahoma City Thunder and the fourth seed as they continue to fight for a spot in the playoffs.

Who knows? Maybe another Stockton can help Utah in reaching the postseason once again.
