Remembering Stephen Curry’s 30 greatest moments on his 30th birthday
8. 13 3-pointers
Entering the 2016-17 season, an individual player had made 10 or more 3-pointers 30 times in NBA history. One-fifth of such games belonged to Curry, as did a myriad of other 3-point records.
Given that, it was almost surprising he had not broken Kobe Bryant and Donyell Marshall‘s single-game record of 12 triples. He tied it in overtime once (a game we will get to later), and was within striking distance on multiple occasions in which Kerr sat him down with the game already in hand.
On Nov. 7, 2016, the perfect storm occurred. Coming off his first game without a 3-pointer in 157 outings (one of his many records), Curry was hot early against New Orleans. He hit three 3s in the first quarter and three more in the second, as the Warriors led by 16 at the break. His typical third quarter flurry — 14 points, four triples — threatened to put the game away, but his teammates were ice cold, and it was a six-point game when Curry re-entered with 6:48 left.
The record was falling out of reach with Curry stuck on 10 3s and and 3:34 left, but in typical Curry fashion, he had the record three possessions later, at 2:23.
