Philadelphia 76ers: 3 steps to acquiring LeBron James
By Simon Smith
The question isn’t whether or not the Philadelphia 76ers would be interested in LeBron James, but instead — how do they go about obtaining his services?
This summer is bound to be extremely pivotal in terms of the future direction of the Philadelphia 76ers.
Currently placed sixth in the Eastern Conference standings with a 35-27 record, the Sixers are poised to make their first playoff appearance since 2012. Considering the path the franchise has taken over recent years, this represents a feeling of both satisfaction and relief among the key decision-makers.
But as impressive as the likes of All-Star center Joel Embiid, and Rookie-of-the-Year contender Ben Simmons have been this season, plenty of questions will still need to be answered this offseason:
- What long-term future does Markelle Fultz, last year’s No. 1 overall pick, have with the franchise?
- Is Dario Saric the long-term answer at the 4?
- Do they continue with J.J. Redick as their starting shooting guard, who will turn 34 in June?
The biggest question, should they decide to choose that route, is to how to go about luring LeBron James. While this is a topic that’s bound to cause much discussion within the organization, a Pennsylvania-based company recently got on the front foot in the lead-up to the Sixers’ most recent matchup with the Cleveland Cavaliers to give the fans’ perspective on the situation:
For his part, James was rather impressed with the proposition:
"“You can say it’s a distraction — it’s not. Not a distraction. It is actually very flattering that I’m sitting here at 33 and in my 15th year and teams or guys — I don’t want to say teams because that becomes tampering. But people in their respective city want me to play for them. That’s cool I think. That’s dope.”"
Possibly the most tantalising aspect of the season-long saga regarding his future is that James has yet to rule anything out. As a result, this allows many teams, such as the Sixers, to forecast the possibility of luring ‘The King’ to their hometown.
With this in mind, here are three suggestions for the Sixers to consider should they enter the LeBron sweepstakes.
