If the Chicago Bulls’ dreams came true this upcoming offseason, one of these superstars would be headed for the Windy City during 2017 NBA free agency.
This upcoming offseason is going to be an interesting one for the Chicago Bulls, a franchise caught in the middle of a painful transition. They’ve got a handful of intriguing young prospects, but no true superstar to tie it all together.
The one thing they do have right now is cap space, at least theoretically. According to Spotrac.com, the Bulls have $41.5 million in “practical cap space,” or “cap space with cap holds renounced if team salary was below the cap maximum.” Essentially, it’s room they could create if players like Noah Vonleh and Zach LaVine were allowed to walk this offseason.
So why would they take this approach? Well, as I’m going to go over shortly, I want to take a look at dream targets for the Bulls during 2018 NBA free agency. Yes, there’s a very good chance none of these players is even interested in signing with Chicago. That, however, doesn’t mean we can’t speculate on what it would look like if deals were struck. In order for that to happen, though, the Bulls would have to tap into this “practical cap space.”
When it all comes down to it, isn’t that the point of the offseason? Speculate on what could be. Look at all the scenarios, regardless of the odds. As we’ve all seen in recent years, anything can happen in the NBA if you open your mind to the possibilities.
