5. Trail Blazers bolster roster with Hassan Whiteside

For some time now, the Portland Trail Blazers have been rumored as being interested in acquiring DeAndre Jordan (via the LA Times‘ Broderick Turner). However, with interest and opportunities waning, it may be time for them to turn their attention elsewhere.

As it so happens, there’s another big-name center who could be had for the right price. In this situation, I’m talking about Hassan Whiteside, the player who once seemed like the future of the Miami Heat. However, as we head toward the 2018 trade deadline, it appears the franchise isn’t opposed to dealing the big man.

Honestly, it would probably come down to the Blazers’ offer. While there aren’t a ton of exciting options they’d be willing to part with, they could intrigue Miami with a couple of expiring contracts and some draft assets. Portland can find a way to make a deal worth their while.

As for what they get in turn, you probably know what Whiteside brings to the table. He’s an outstanding defensive presence in the middle who can protect the rim with the best of them. Having an elite center would do wonders for their contender status, especially since they’re already ranked 11th in defensive rating.

Whiteside would cost Portland a pretty penny to acquire. If the Blazers truly want to make a run in the Western Conference, though, this move could be the solution.
