3. Omer Asik, C

Once upon a time, Omer Asik was a coveted center around the league. Those days are long gone, especially given the fact that he’s been practically injured the last two seasons. However, the Pelicans will need Asik and whatever they can get from him in terms of rebounding and defensive effort with Cousins out.

Keep in mind, Asik won’t drop 30 on any given night, wont grab 20 rebounds, get a steal, or even shoot 3s, for that matter. However, if the New Orleans Pelicans were to get something close to a double-double, and perhaps a blocked shot a game, it would cover some major ground for this team. In other words, the Pelicans don’t need Asik to try and imitate Cousins. What they need is Asik to tackle a role and thrive in it.

While the Pelicans may look for help at the center spot, for now, expect Asik and Cheick Diallo to split time at the position until further notice. Alexis Ajinca is out for the remainder of the season and will not be available.

Tough stretch, but if the Pelicans are to remain afloat, Omer Asik will have to give everything he has until New Orleans proves it can make a move prior to the trade deadline.
