The New Orleans Pelicans were finally hitting their stride, but their playoff hopes may now be in question after DeMarcus Cousins went down with a season-ending Achilles injury. Which Pelicans players need to step in his place?
The New Orleans Pelicans (27-22) got hit pretty hard as All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins‘ season came to an abrupt end Friday night. Cousins, 28, was playing at a ridiculously high level and was surely getting a huge deal this offseason. However, it is questionable how Boogie will return after suffering a torn Achilles at the end of their victory over the Houston Rockets.
Prior to game, the Pelicans looked like they were turning a corner. New Orleans had won three straight, and was getting monster performances from their big guys. The guards matched the bigs’ level of play and the Pelicans bench had started showing up. It is unfortunate because Anthony Davis finally had the help he deserves. Now the question is can the New Orleans Pelicans survive without Cousins?
In order for NOLA to keep its playoff hopes alive, several players have to step up big time, including Davis. Alvin Gentry now has the challenge of adjusting his lineups and continuing forward — not easy for a coach who’s been on the hot seat. As it currently stands, the Pelicans are sixth in the West. However, not much separates them from the bottom teams in contention.
With that being said, let’s examine five players that need to step up for the New Orleans Pelicans.
