New Orleans Pelicans: 3 players the Pelicans should look into acquiring
By Eric Magana
Marco Belinelli, Atlanta Hawks
While it has been a long time since Marco Belinelli shot over 40 percent from deep, on a contending team he is still valuable. He can create space and at times is crafty with the ball. His average for the season from long range is at 36.4 percent. Pair that with E’Twaun Moore, shooting 42.7 percent from deep, and Darius Miller, shooting 42.1 percent, and now there’s more offense to help Anthony Davis.
With Belinelli in the rotation, the New Orleans Pelicans have more depth at the wing position and a veteran who has experienced postseason success. In fact, Belinelli was a part of the San Antonio Spurs team that won the title in 2014. That season he shot 43 percent from beyond the arc. Put him in a winning environment, and Belinelli typically shows up to play.
If the Pelicans were to acquire him, it will be as a rental, because after this season he will be an unrestricted free agent. However, he would be worth it considering he brings depth and shooting ability. He is a veteran with knowledge and experience when it matters most.
Unfortunately, as will be the case with several players mentioned, the Pelicans don’t have much to offer in return. If New Orleans were to acquire Belinelli from the Atlanta Hawks it has to be a decent package at the very least in return. Either way it’ll be tough to get it done. However, it doesn’t hurt to try and see if it is possible.
