DeMarcus Cousins

For the last year or so, there’s been nonstop speculation about the future of DeMarcus Cousins. Would the New Orleans Pelicans trade him? Or would they decide to let things play out with their intriguing “Twin Towers” approach? Well, we may soon find out.

If I had to say, though, I’d go with the latter.

While it was a steal, the Pelicans gave up quite a bit to get Cousins from the Sacramento Kings. On top of that, he’s been a beast as of late, putting together the first 40-20-10 game in over 50 years on Monday night. Especially with their current standing of sixth in the West, can New Orleans really throw in the towel that early?

This Pelicans team is just starting to jell. They’ve rattled off five wins in their last six games, and can easily make a case as a sleeper in the West. Imagine if Cousins can stay hot through to the playoffs — we could see New Orleans make it past the first round of the playoffs for only the second time in franchise history.

There will be offers made for Cousins, and Pelicans brass may even ponder them. However, when all is said and done, I believe they let this experiment run its course. It would be a hefty price to pay for Cousins to leave via free agency come July, but it seems like a risk worth taking.
