4. Drafting Sterling Brown at No. 46

Having taken a frontcourt piece in the first round, Milwaukee turned to its backcourt with the 46th pick. They took Sterling Brown, a 6’6” shooting guard out of SMU who finished his four-year career as the school’s all-time leader in wins. After striking second round gold with four-year player Malcolm Brogdon in 2016, the Bucks went back to the same well with Brown.

Less is expected out of Brown as a second round rookie, but more has also been given. Brown has appeared in 15 games, averaging eight minutes per game and scoring 2.8 points per contest. Picked to be a knockdown shooter, Brown has stepped up to hit 45.5 percent of his limited attempts.

Of the 14 players taken after Brown, eight have yet to appear in an NBA game. Most of the others have yet to see any real time or play any significant role. While a number of players taken just before Brown have carved out roles — Jawun Evans, Jordan Bell, Semi Ojeleye, Tyler Dorsey and Dillon Brooks all went within 10 picks of Brown — only Sindarius Thornwell has done so of players taken after Brown.

A handful of undrafted players are pushing for a role in the NBA, including Glan Clavell of the Dallas Mavericks and Tyler Cavanaugh of the Atlanta Hawks. But no one has stood out thus far, giving Brown every opportunity to prove his value as the 46th pick.
