4. DeMarcus Cousins, C, New Orleans Pelicans

There is so much for the New Orleans Pelicans to keep in mind as it relates to trading DeMarcus Cousins. However, while currently sitting in eighth place in the Western Conference, it’s unclear what direction appears to be their best bet.

On one hand, moving him may be the best option with his contract ending in a few months. The Pelicans got a steal when they traded for him last year, but still gave up considerable assets to do so. Recouping at least some of their investment would be ideal instead of simply letting him walk away.

On the other hand, can they really give up on this experiment so soon? Teaming Cousins with Anthony Davis immediately gave the Pelicans one of the best frontcourt duos in recent memory. The supporting cast isn’t there, but throwing in the towel so soon seems drastic. According to ESPN‘s Adrian Wojnarowski, New Orleans intends to keep him.

I guess it all comes down to whether or not Cousins wants to be in New Orleans long term. If they get the sense he wants to re-sign, I don’t think the Pelicans pull the trigger on a trade. They have their hands on two of the best big men in the NBA, but need more pieces around them to become legitimate contenders. Letting Cousins go would obviously set them back in that regard.

If they get any inkling that Cousins will bail this offseason though, they’ll make a trade.
