5. Julius Randle, PF, Los Angeles Lakers

In the next month, the Los Angeles Lakers are going to do everything in their power to unload Julius Randle and his expiring contract. They aren’t going to want to re-sign the restricted free agent, especially with their sights set on two superstars during 2018 free agency.

The problem is finding a suitor, especially considering the Lakers’ other interests at the moment. They’re looking to unload Luol Deng‘s contract, which is likely going to cost more than a quality starting power forward and a 2020 first round pick. Even if Deng isn’t involved, Los Angeles likely values him more than other teams.

Now there’s plenty to sell with Randle. He’s a high-energy forward and small-ball center who has undergone significant improvement in the last year. Still, his defense is inconsistent, his jumper is unreliable and until the last couple of games, he’s been coasting as of late as things start to fall apart behind the scenes in Hollywood.

Especially with other assets to dangle (i.e. Jordan Clarkson, Larry Nance Jr.), the Lakers may struggle to move Randle. Either that, or they’re going to have to accept a deal that’s below their expectations.

Either way, plenty of effort will be put into finding Randle a new home. I’m just not convincing Magic Johnson is going to find the offer he’s looking for. It’s very likely he’s traded, but there’s no guarantee as we work our way into the middle of January. That’s why Randle sits here at No. 5.
