1. Dallas Mavericks

Another Western Conference team could make a case to acquire a veteran small forward to help out a young core struggling to win games. The Dallas Mavericks have had trouble finding a bridge from Dirk Nowitzki to their next franchise player, though they seem to have a start judging by the play of rookie point guard Dennis Smith Jr.

Dallas has a handful of one-year contracts that the Lakers would be more than happy take on if the Mavericks are willing to pay the rest of Luol Deng’s contract. However, a team owned by business mogul Mark Cuban is not going to make a deal without being properly compensated for this risk.

The Lakers would send Luol Deng and Julius Randle to Dallas in exchange for four one-year contracts in the form of Devin Harris, Seth Curry, Salah Mejri and Yogi Ferrell. The Mavericks would have a power forward capable of taking the torch from Dirk Nowitzki and the Lakers would be free of Luol Deng’s overpriced contract.

The Lakers would end up with some interesting players that they could evaluate for a spot on next year’s team. Seth Curry has proven he can be a formidable scorer in the NBA, and Yogi Ferrell is a tricky point guard that has found his way to the league after being undrafted out of Indiana.

Overall, it’s clear the Lakers have potential trade partners for Luol Deng if they can find someone interested in Julius Randle (or potentially a first round draft pick instead). Now it’s a matter of finding a willing trade partner and including the right assets to pull the trigger.
