Marc Gasol, C, Memphis Grizzlies

Right now, there’s a lot going on in Tennessee. Following the abrupt firing of David Fizdale, it’s appearing as though a full-fledged rebuild is on the horizon. With three max contract players on the roster, the Memphis Grizzlies could be looking for a way to unload some salary.

Following Fizdale’s departure, it was assumed Gasol was safe after the Grizzlies’ star met with team brass in what appeared to be a “it’s him or me” kind of situation. However, based on quotes in a recent piece by Sporting News’ Sean Deveney, there’s a belief that the Spaniard is far from untouchable.

"“I don’t think they’re done making changes,” one league executive said on Monday. “They could still move Gasol, they could still go into a rebuilding situation, but it would be harder if Gasol was saying he wants out. They have had plenty of offers for Gasol, and they have a couple of months to sort out whether they pull the trigger. But don’t be surprised if they do, even after this.”"

You have to believe there would be a number of potential suitors for Gasol’s services. He may be up there in age at 32, but he’s still a star in his own right. If there’s a team in need of help at center, Gasol could undoubtedly help lock down the paint while providing another excellent scoring threat.

The obvious problem is Gasol’s massive contract. He’s owed almost $47 million between this season and next, and has a $25.5 million player option for 2019-20. Especially with so many contenders already scheduled to pay huge luxury tax bills, it’s not going to be easy finding a taker for that deal.

As the above quote mentioned, though, there have been offers. If the right trade proposition comes across general manager Chris Wallace’s desk, he may just decide to take it.
