The Los Angeles Lakers have several young players that provide options for the team. With a huge free agency class coming next summer, who should the Lakers keep for the future?
The Los Angeles Lakers are an interesting team this year and going forward. With Julius Randle’s position on the team uncertain going forward, it’s time to evaluate who the Lakers should keep around. Of course, Lonzo Ball is here to stay, despite his offensive struggles. While Los Angeles is competitive this year, let’s not forget something. This team is after some big names next summer.
So, who exactly are those big names? The list includes the likes of LeBron James, Paul George, DeMarcus Cousins, and DeAndre Jordan. Basically, the Lakers are in tryout mode this season. With the way they have been playing, it’s not a bad place for free agents to consider. With the beauty of L.A. aside, this is a historic franchise. Who wouldn’t want to play for a team with 16 NBA titles?
However, in order for the Lakers to get at least two of those big names, some big moves have to happen, including trading away Luol Deng’s contract, possibly renouncing Julius Randle’s rights, and letting Corey Brewer, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Andrew Bogut, and Brook Lopez sign with other teams next summer.
Also, one of the four young pieces will be difficult to keep around if the above moves are not made. More on that situation ahead.
During this trial season, coach Luke Walton has some nice pieces to play with. He’s got a loaded frontcourt, and some depth at the guard positions. The development of the Lakers’ young core is essential if they are to truly compete next season and beyond. So which young players should the Lakers keep for the future?
