Derrick Favors

The Utah Jazz have a decision to make with Derrick Favors this season.

Entering the final year of his contract with the Jazz, making $12 million this year, Utah has three decisions they can make with the 26-year-old forward.

The first option is to sign the eight-year big man to an extension, which is starting to seem like more of an unlikely option due to the team signing Rudy Gobert to a $100 million extension last season and having to make a decision on what they want to do with Rodney Hood and Ricky Rubio in the next year or so.

The second option is to let his contract run out after the season without signing him to an extension, testing their luck with convincing Favors to come back to Utah in the offseason. This option would likely cost more for the Jazz than to sign him to an extension during the season, but wouldn’t force them to make a decision on Favors during the course of the season.

The third option is to field trade calls for Favors, which have increased over the past few seasons. Dating back to last season, Favors name has popped up in trade rumors more and more often. That increased once again over the offseason, mainly right before the draft, but ultimately the team decided to not trade away Favors. If the team decided to trade away Favors this season, he could be the focal point in a trade that the Jazz could get a nice piece in return for.

Utah has a lot of decisions to make in the next year or two, and the first step is deciding what to do with Favors.
