Lonzo’s shot selection

The final part of Lonzo’s offensive woes come from his poor shot selection. As mentioned before, his shot might need some adjusting. Combine an awkward shot with poor shot selection, and there is a recipe for disaster. Now his poor shot selection can come from a variety of reasons — lack of aggression, the isolation issue after the first pass or even just a lack of confidence.

With all that said, Lonzo should slow down and evaluate the floor better. Instead of taking the long contested 3, move in for an easier shot inside. Perhaps drive and kick out more. Better shooting from the free throw line is a good way to get out of a shooting slump. The biggest issue is the amount of ill-advised shots he hacks up.

Over time, he will have to build strength and confidence in order to be a serviceable player in this league. For a player as talented as Ball, there shouldn’t be any questions about him being benched. The key thing for the Lakers and Lonzo is time. Time and commitment. Magic Johnson continues to believe in him and so does Luke Walton. With enough time, he should start finding a groove in the NBA. But not without work and adjustment.

Lonzo Ball has a long way to go in this league. He may not be stellar right now, but with some adjustment and a confidence boost,  he may start terrorizing this league just as Magic envisions he will. Showtime isn’t back by a long stretch, but maybe in the near future the glimpses of those ’80s Lakers teams may start to develop and Lonzo will find his inner Magic Johnson. Not be Magic, but somewhat like him.
