The minor signings: Green and Calderon

The Cavs’ two minor signings have yielded different results. Jeff Green was supposed to be an afterthought for the Cavs, maybe someone who could log minutes if Channing Frye or Tristan Thompson went down.

But Green has flipped the script, earning time as a regular part of the team’s rotation. His shooting percentage is unsustainably high at 51 percent. He dropped 27 points against Houston and has five performances of at least 10 points under his belt.

So Jeff Green has been impressive, a valuable piece off the bench. And with so many injuries, every positive piece is welcome. With that in mind, Jeff Green has earned an “A.”

On the other hand, Calderon has been a disappointment. The expectations weren’t high for a journeyman who played in just 41 games, averaging about 13 minutes per contest last season. But he’s been almost unserviceable when playing.

So…”F?” It almost seems unfair to fail a player who’s contributed a lot to basketball, but right now he’s not cutting it. With the grades of an A and an F, this averages out to a C overall.
