Toronto Raptors: 5 goals for Jonas Valanciunas in 2017-18
2. Create scoring opportunities for teammates
Perhaps the biggest weakness in the game of both the Toronto Raptors and Jonas Valanciunas is the ability to move the ball.
Valanciunas has yet to dish out 60 assists at any point in his career, as he has struggled to find an open teammate when he is operating in the post. For his career, Valanciunas has turned the ball over 530 times while totaling just 240 assists, an assist-to-turnover ratio of 0.45 during his five seasons in the NBA.
Part of the low assist figures and the high turnover rate is the predicitibility in his game. Nearly 40 percent of the total passes Valanciunas threw last season went to point guard Kyle Lowry, but resulted in only 0.2 assists a night.
The lack of scoring opportunities created for the Raptors isn’t limited to just their center. Toronto was the worst passing team in the league in 2016-17, averaging 18.5 assists per game. The total was 1.1 fewer than any other team in the league and 3.3 below the average opponents registered against them.
Better ball movement from Valanciunas and the Raptors could make the team even more dangerous offensively.
