The Memphis Grizzlies have had a sustained run of competence that has translated to consistent trips to the playoffs. What do they need to keep it going in 2017-18?
The Memphis Grizzlies have made the playoffs for seven straight years, a remarkable run of success that has ingratiated the team with the city in a beautiful way. Postseason play has become an expectation within the organization and the fanbase, and a reality for the better part of a decade. For the first time in a long time, however, there may be some reason for concern.
The team lost two of its founding members from the most recent era of success in Zach Randolph and Tony Allen this offseason. Both played major minutes throughout Memphis’ run to the playoffs last season, and have shaped the identity and ethos of the Grizzlies for years. Their departure will be felt deeply, but the expectation of postseason play will be no less present. The Grizzlies have two in-prime stars in Mike Conley and Marc Gasol, and they’re rightfully looking to leverage their abilities towards a winning year.
Things may be a a bit more challenging than in seasons past. The Western Conference is loaded with talent, and many of Memphis’ peers took a step forward this summer. The Grizzlies went sideways at best. They may still have enough firepower to compete for one of the low-end playoff spots, but they’ll need a few things to go right.
