NBA: Ranking all 30 starting point guards for 2017-18
28. Dejounte Murray, San Antonio Spurs
Don’t get me wrong, Dejounte Murray has the potential to be Kawhi Leonard‘s star sidekick in a few years. But for the time being, a second-year player taking over the helm of a Western contender like the San Antonio Spurs is a daunting proposition.
Tony Parker is reportedly ahead of schedule recovering from last year’s season-ending quadriceps injury, targeting a November, but until he’s back on the floor, I’ll believe it when I see it.
Until that day arrives, Murray takes over the wheel, allowing Gregg Popovich to keep Patty Mills in charge of the second year. Murray averaged 3.4 points and 1.3 assists in 8.5 minutes per game over 38 rookie appearances, so although he shot 39.4 percent from deep, he’ll only be the starter by name, with Mills taking the majority of the minutes and Parker taking over once he’s back.
