3. Richard Jefferson

At 36 years old, Richard Jefferson is running out of years as an effective basketball player. While he’s been decent during his short two-year stint with the Cavaliers, it’s becoming clear that he’s nothing more than a cheap, veteran roster-filler.

I know that’s what Cleveland was looking for when they signed him. At the same time, though, they need more reliable production and play off the bench, especially if they plan on competing in what could be LeBron James‘ final year with the team. That’s why I wouldn’t be surprised if Jefferson was gone by next offseason.

That could happen in a number of ways, but the most likely option seems to be via trade. More than likely, the Cavaliers will be active leading up to the 2018 trade deadline. While I believe this roster can compete for the Eastern Conference crown this season, it may need another upgrade or two to be the clear-cut No. 1.

Jefferson makes sense as a potential trade chip for a couple of reasons. First, he’s cheap ($2.5 million) but still a capable talent who can contribute solid minutes off the bench. Second, he’s only under contract through 2019, so there’s no long-term commitment.

Holding onto him wouldn’t be the worst idea. When the trade talks inevitably pick up, though, I see Jefferson being thrown into a deal to make the financials work or to give Cleveland’s trade partner some added depth.
