Storyline 3: Can the Bucks challenge the King?

For the last seven years, LeBron James has ruled the Eastern Conference. First with the Miami Heat, and then with the Cleveland Cavaliers, James has won 21 straight series against Eastern Conference foes, including dispatching the Bucks in 2013.

LeBron’s Cavaliers team is again the favorite to win the Eastern Conference, once again teaming up with Dwyane Wade and with Isaiah Thomas at point instead of Kyrie Irving. With Thomas injured, Wade aging, and the backcourt otherwise filled with questions, this could be James’ most vulnerable year yet.

The question is whether Milwaukee is yet ready to take advantage. Giannis Antetokounmpo has never faced James in the postseason, although he and the Bucks have fared well against the Cavaliers in recent regular season matchups. Antetokounmpo is one of the few stars capable of matching up defensively with James, and may be the only one remaining in the Eastern Conference with Paul George and Jimmy Butler sent West.

For Milwaukee to realistically conquer the Cavaliers, they will need growth from their young players — Tony Snell, Malcolm Brogdon, Thon Maker and Khris Middleton. Jabari Parker could be a key piece against the Cavaliers if he can return healthy. This team has the defenders to snuff out the Cavaliers’ offensive pieces.

But the true key will be the growth of Giannis. If he reaches true MVP-level, then he can claim the title of best player on the court in a series with LeBron James. Then, and only then, will the Bucks have a shot at dethroning the King.
