Weakness No. 2: The starting point guard position

In last year’s playoffs, Tony Parker injured his quad. This would call for surgery and will make Parker miss most of the first half of the season. As a result, the Spurs are without a starting point guard. This means they have to look for someone else to fill this role while Parker recovers.

The Spurs still have Patty Mills, who is used to coming off the bench. That seems to work out best, since he averaged 9.5 points and 3.5 assists per game last season. Would it seem likely for Mills to take over the starting spot?

If that did happen, then the bench would suffer a significant blow. Mills has always been looked at as the leader of that team and to take him out of that role would not seem practical.

This means that Dejounte Murray will be looked at to start, as he did in the team’s first preseason contest. Entering his second season, Murray has all eyes on him. He is going to have to help take his team to a solid start to the season. And it looks like he is handling the pressure so far.

This could either work out well or not work at all. Having a 21-year-old who only played roughly eight minutes a game last year start is alarming. But, you can never doubt the Spurs.
