Los Angeles Clippers: 5 goals for Patrick Beverley in 2017-18
3. Average 12 or more points per game
Patrick Beverley’s points per game averages have been remarkably consistent over the last four seasons. However, he has also been on a steady decline in terms of his scoring averages — something he should look to correct in the 2017-18 season.
Beverley averaged 10.2 points per game in 2013-14. He followed that up with averages of 10.1, 9.9, and 9.5 points per game in the three subsequent seasons. His 8.1 field goal attempts per game last year was his lowest mark since his rookie year when he had yet to crack the starting lineup.
Since Beverley will not be playing alongside a ball-dominant 2-guard like James Harden next year, he should look to up his scoring just slightly. He should have more opportunities to run the offense in 2017-18, even as a secondary pick-and-roll guard.
While the Clippers should not be upset if he continues to sacrifice offense for defense, he should have a slightly bigger role on offense this season than he did in Houston. That alone should be enough to boost his scoring and reverse his (very minor) downward scoring trend.
