4. Starting lineup not set in stone

When the Bulls went into training camp last season, the starting lineup was pretty much determined, with the exception of the power forward position. Fast forwarding to today, the story isn’t quite as clear cut as it was a year ago.

In fact, other than Robin Lopez getting the nod at the center spot and LaVine starting at the shooting guard slot upon his return to action, Fred Hoiberg willingly admitted he wasn’t certain what his starting lineup will be.

"“I don’t know,” Hoiberg told the Chicago Tribune. “It’s going to be an open competition for our spots and that’s going to create good, healthy competition. And that’s what I’ve seen from this group basically for the three weeks we’ve had leading into the month.”"

While competition for the small and power forward positions should be intriguing, one other spot worth keeping a watchful eye on is the point guard slot. With Cameron Payne not expected to return until January for the second straight season after undergoing foot surgery, Dunn and Jerian Grant will more than likely battle it out for the lead guard slot.

Grant is the better shooter, having converted 42 percent of his attempts from 3-point range as a starter last season, but Dunn is the better defender. That being said, it should be interesting to see which of these two emerges as the team’s starting point guard.

My money says Dunn will be the lead guard eventually — as long as he can demonstrate the ability to be a decent perimeter threat.
