3. Embracing the rebuilding efforts

When Travis Schlenk vacated his position as the assistant general manager of the Golden State Warriors to take on the general manager post of the Atlanta Hawks, he refused to deem his entrance as the start of a rebuilding process.

Only each move he made in the offseason facilitated drastic roster changes.

Almost immediately after assuming his role in Atlanta,  Schlenk dealt away Dwight Howard and stated Paul Millsap would likely receive better offers in free agency elsewhere. Ultimately, Millsap left for Denver without an offer for a new deal to remain with the Hawks.

The new group of players, with Dewayne Dedmon, John Collins, Miles Plumlee and Luke Babbitt, all added to the team this summer, are expected to play a majority of the minutes in the frontcourt.

Schlenk discussed the way he built the roster during his Media Day session on NBA.com.

"“We went into this offseason with a couple of goals. The first of those two goals were to try and get younger. The second thing we wanted to accomplish was financial flexibility moving forward.”"

Atlanta went from the fifth-oldest team in the league to one of its youngest, with eight players in training camp with less than two years of experience.

The Hawks are largely unproven, but Schlenk has managed to avoid committing any long-term contracts to the new additions to the roster.
