NBA: 10 relative unknowns entering defining seasons in 2017-18
5. Ben McLemore
Throw Ben McLemore with Nik Stauskas in the “What Could Have Been?” category for promising players drafted by the wrong team (a.k.a the Sacramento Kings). After four underwhelming seasons under four different head coaches, McLemore will be playing for a more stable organization and hoping the change of scenery does him well.
On a two-year, $11 million deal with the Memphis Grizzlies, he doesn’t have a whole lot of time to prove himself. The Grizz need help on the wing with Tony Allen gone and Chandler Parsons‘ joints being made of Pixy Stix, and they’re hoping the 24-year-old shooting guard can answer the call.
The signing of Tyreke Evans provides some competition, which is good for a young player who needs to prove himself. Though McLemore shot 38.2 percent from downtown last season and has increased his 3-point percentage every year, he needs to continue improving to elevate his career 35.2 percent conversion rate from distance.
At various times in Sacramento, McLemore came off the bench behind guys like James Anderson and Garrett Temple. It’s probably time to show he was worthy of being a top 10 selection back in 2013.
