The Chicago Bulls have made quite a handful of moves this summer, and yet there is still no word on Nikola Mirotic.

Nikola Mirotic‘s social media paints a seemingly clear picture of his summer: the forward has been hard at work at the Chicago Bulls practice facility, gearing up for the team’s 2017-18 season.

And while he has indeed been staying in shape via the Advocate Center, as of now, he has no actual affiliation with the franchise.

Having become a restricted free agent in July, many expected Mirotic to re-sign with the Bulls immediately. Between him continuously showing love for the organization and vice president John Paxson singing his praises, it appeared the two parties were always on the same page.

"“I love the Bulls,” said Mirotic. “I love my teammates. I love the city. It’s the perfect place for me. My family is very happy and comfortable here. The first idea is to re-sign.”"

It was an idea that the front office had too.

"“We hope we’ll be able to work something out…,” Paxson explained. “Because let’s face it, in this game, you need floor spacers and shooters. And when he’s playing that role, he does help our basketball team.”"

But unfortunately, just days away from Chicago’s Media Day and the start of training camp, the 26-year-old is still without a contract.

Why? Good luck figuring out the answer to that one.

When Paxson was asked about the forward on Tuesday, he simply said there was no update to give.

"“No update with Niko. Gar [Forman] continues to talk to his representatives, and the qualifying offer is still out there, but no.”"

The qualifying offer being $7.2 million on the season.

Of course, Mirotic could also agree to a multi-year deal, meaning the Bulls would lock him in on a more long-term basis and avoid him becoming an unrestricted free agent next summer.

So what happens now?

Well, in order for the big man to actually start practicing with the team, he will have to reach some sort of agreement with the front office. And seeing as practice officially starts next week, time is very much of the essence.

More from Chicago Bulls

In other words, it can be inferred that management and Mirotic’s representatives will be having numerous discussions over the next couple of days in an effort to reach some sort of an agreement.

Otherwise, seeing as the third-year has yet to receive any other offers, he may just have to bite the $7.2 million bullet.

Chicago has made some questionable decisions over the last few seasons, but it is likely that this particular situation should be blamed on Mirotic.

While a player has every right to try and earn as much as possible, the Yugoslavia-native’s numbers are not exactly impressive. Having averaged 10.6 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.1 assists a game in 24.0 minutes of play last year, he actually regressed from 2015-16.

He shot just 34.2 percent from downtown on the season, his 3-point shooting supposedly being his strong suit. And he was less than reliable, putting up the likes of 28 points two contests in a row, only to follow with scoring just eight points in 31 minutes.

It’s hard to blame the Bulls for holding out when there is no guarantee that Mirotic’s ceiling is much higher.

Nikola Mirotic will probably be back with the Chicago Bulls come 2017-18… but the question is, at what cost?
