As Bobby Portis approaches the final year of his rookie contract with the Chicago Bulls, here are five goals he should focus on for the 2017-18 NBA season.

Two years ago, the Chicago Bulls went into the 2015 NBA Draft looking to bolster the backup point guard position. Instead, with the No. 22 overall pick, they selected Bobby Portis from the University of Arkansas.

On the surface, this move raised a few eyebrows considering the logjam they had in the frontcourt at the time. But following a sophomore campaign for the Razorbacks in which Portis posted 17.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per contest while shooting 54 percent from the field, the Bulls felt he was the best player on the board.

Considering the numbers he put up during his last collegiate season, the Bulls made somewhat of a reasonable choice, even if it was not the position they were looking to solidify. Fast forward to the present, though, and even the most diehard Bulls fans will say that Portis hasn’t taken the next step in terms of becoming a regular rotation player.

During his first two seasons in Chicago, Portis’ averages included 6.9 points and 5.0 rebounds per contest on 46 percent shooting. These numbers don’t exactly jump off the stat sheet, but at the same time, they aren’t overly terrible either, considering where Portis was taken in the draft.

However, with a potential make-or-break season on the horizon, Portis will need to improve in a few areas. Bearing all this in mind, here’s a look at the five goals he should focus on for the upcoming 2017-18 season.
