Drafting White

The Spurs are used to finding serviceable talent despite almost always picking near the end of the first round. 2017 was no different.

Though Derrick White won’t ever be a stud, he’s a capable, 6’5″ combo guard who will provide backcourt depth to a team that may be missing Tony Parker for the first half of the season and only has sixth man Patty Mills and second-year guard Dejounte Murray to turn to.

In his lone season at Colorado, White averaged a well-rounded 18.1 points, 4.4 assists, 4.1 rebounds, 1.4 blocks and 1.2 steals per game. He also shot an efficient 50.7 percent from the field, 39.6 percent from 3-point range and 81.3 percent from the foul line.

White is already 23 years old after spending three years playing Division II basketball, and he doesn’t move the needle much for the Spurs in the short-term, but this was a good selection for the 29th overall pick.

Grade: B+
