Strength No. 1: Craft

In Marc Gasol and Mike Conley, the Memphis Grizzlies have two of the most skilled players in the league. Gasol, who has always been a heady defender, brilliant passer and low post maestro, added range out to the 3-point line last year. He sticks out as a ground-bound bruiser in a league dominated by statuesque high flyers, but there is almost nothing he can’t do on the court.

Conley, though slightly closer to his peers athletically, is similar. He’s a stopping, starting dervish of floaters and off-hand layups, with an incredible feel for the game. He consistently rates out as one of the game’s better point guard defenders as well (sadly, a drop-off may be forthcoming here).

Both players are exceedingly smart, and that matters a lot. There is something to be said for always being a step ahead of your opponent. Even if you can’t run as fast or jump as high. It’s what has kept Memphis competitive for so many years. Nothings suggests it’s likely to stop this year.
