Miami Heat: 5 goals for Tyler Johnson in 2017-18
By Simon Smith
2. Shoot 40 percent from 3-point range
Over his three seasons in the league, Johnson has gradually increased his long range proficiency.
He has steadily increased from 1.5 attempts per game in his debut season, to 2.0 attempts per game in his second season, to last year jacking up 3.4 per game. All the while, his conversion rate has stayed around the same, with his current career 3-point shooting rate sitting at 37.4 percent.
The next challenge for Johnson will be for Johnson to ramp this up a notch, and enter the elite category of a 40 percent return from downtown.
Last season, Johnson had 11 games in which he nailed three or more 3-pointers, including three games of four 3-pointers. Over these 11 games, he shot at a 72.6 percent clip. Conversely, Johnson had 23 games (on 47 attempts) in which he failed to nailed a three.
The key for Johnson moving forward is to reduce the difference between his best and worst performances.
Overall, his best area for 3-point shooting came from the right corner, hitting at 43.3 percent clip. Johnson’s ability to play both on and off the ball makes him an even more worrying threat for opposing defenses. While 41.7 percent of his total field goals made came unassisted, just 4.3 percent of his made 3-pointers were unassisted.
