Strength No. 3: Improved guard play

The Dallas Mavericks thought the signing of Deron Williams would shore up problems at the point guard position. However, after 40 games, Williams was sent to the bench by February.

Williams’ shoot-first mentality didn’t work too well with the philosophy of head coach Rick Carlisle and the team ultimately suffered. Williams was subsequently waived by the Mavs on Feb. 23.

The NBA Draft was a rewarding experience for the Mavericks as a result, as Dennis Smith Jr. all but fell in their lap. Prior to drafting Smith, Dallas also found a gem in point guard Yogi Ferrell.

Ferrell put up 11.3 points, 4.3 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game in 36 games for Dallas last season. He was a nice complement to fellow guard Seth Curry.

In NBA Summer League, Ferrell proved to be even more valuable with Dennis Smith Jr. in the backcourt, opening up the potential for them to play together. Both players will be valued for their ability on the defensive end.

The outlook on 2017-18 for the Dallas Mavericks is they have improved guard play to look forward to. They still have veterans J.J. Barea and Devin Harris on the roster as well. The Mavericks should use to their advantage next season and contend for a spot in the playoffs as a result.
