The Dallas Mavericks have a few strengths and weaknesses entering the 2017-18 season. Here we’ll take a look at how things are shaping up for them.

The 2016-17 season was a conundrum for the Dallas Mavericks. They began the season with their leader in future Hall-of-Famer Dirk Nowitzki on the injured side of things. As a result, they started out with a 10-24 record through the month of December.

The Mavericks could never recover and get back to within playoff range. They finished the season with a 33-49 record as the 11th best team in the West.

However, the offseason has brought the Mavericks a reason to look forward to the 2017-18 season. With the ninth overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, Dallas picked up explosive point guard Dennis Smith Jr. Despite how his NC State Wolfpack finished, Smith was one of the best freshman in the country.

Next to the rookie, the team also has Seth Curry and Yogi Ferrell. Both guards have shown abilities to do different things and as a result, have the Mavericks in a good position for this upcoming season.
