Atlanta Hawks: 5 goals for Dennis Schroder in 2017-18
4. Earn more trips to the foul line
Anytime the ball is placed into the hands of Dennis Schroder, opponents expected him to navigate his way to the rim. Schroder drove to the basket 12.1 times per game, second only to Isaiah Thomas, but once he was at the rim, he rarely generated enough contact to earn a trip to the free throw line.
Even with all of the drives to the basket, 21 other players managed to average more than the 1.6 free throw attempts Schroder earned off his slashes to the rim. Schroder converted 274 shots at the rim, but only completed 25 and-one opportunities.
For the season, Schroder played 2,485 minutes and attempted 255 free throws, equating to one every 9.8 minutes played. The 6’1″ point guard was one of just 14 players to play more than 2,400 minutes and attempt fewer than 265 free throws.
The only other player on the list with Schroder to average over 5.0 drives per game while taking that minuscule amount of free throws was Orlando Magic guard Elfrid Payton.
If Schroder can generate more free throw attempts, he could provide a much-needed scoring boost to a team that ranked 27th in the league in offensive rating.
