Washington Wizards: 5 goals for Bradley Beal in 2017-18
By Randy Porga
4. Defense matters just as much as offense
Bradley Beal is one of the biggest threats at shooting guard in the league. However, as a team and as individuals, the Wizards’ lack of defense made many games closer than they ever had to be.
For example, last season to keep the focus on Bradley Beal, I ran metrics through all starting guards in the league averaging at least 30 minutes per game and starting at least 70 just for the sake of minor injuries. Those who are more effective in this aspect and ahead of Beal are all the names and players the separate him from being considered truly elite.
By this measurement, Beal ranked ninth-best in defensive rating at 106.5, behind players like Klay Thompson, Stephen Curry, Kemba Walker, Dennis Schroder and Giannis Antetokuonmpo.
While he is not terrible, bringing an intensified focus to the defensive end is not an unachievable goal. By season’s end in 2017-18, Beal must find his balance between offense and defense. The hustle and pace set by the Wizards’ starting five should inspire their bench, and that is where true team leaders thrive.
There are many true scorers at both guard positions throughout the league, but Beal will stand out being able to dominate on both ends of the court.
