If the San Antonio Spurs plan on giving Kawhi Leonard a superstar teammate, they may decide to go for broke and target one of these free agents between now and 2020.
Every offseason it seems, the San Antonio Spurs are mentioned as players for some of the league’s top free agents. Although they don’t always make the expected splash, Gregg Popovich and co. certainly aren’t afraid to spend big if they believe it elevates their chances to contend.
In the last three years, they’ve signed players like LaMarcus Aldridge, Pau Gasol and Rudy Gay. Although none of those players are necessarily superstars anymore, they all offer the type of talent that championships can be built on. For the purposes of this exercise, I’m aiming a little higher than players of that caliber, though.
Today, I’m taking a look at some wildly ambitious free agency targets for San Antonio in the next three years. Between now and 2020, the following players at least have the option to hit the open market. Assuming that happens, I believe they’d all fall directly into the Spurs’ crosshairs as potential game-changers.
Realistically, with their current roster, the Spurs aren’t going to get the job done. Kawhi Leonard is certainly a superstar in his own right, but aging or inexperienced players will continue to hold this franchise back in their pursuit of another NBA title.

Signing any one of these stars in the next three years, though, would likely change their fortunes. So here they are — the five ambitious free agency targets I believe the Spurs will take a long look at if/when they become available.
