Philadelphia 76ers: 5 goals for J.J. Redick in 2017-18
By Simon Smith
1. Maintain elite 3-point shooting
During his time with the Clippers, Redick outlined the importance of being aggressive when it comes to launching from long range:
"“It changes the spacing for everybody….I’ve had games where I’ve taken one 3, two 3s. I’d like to shoot six to eight 3s per game.”"
Last season, Redick averaged 6.0 3-point attempts per game, tying the highest mark of his career. Overall, Redick had 30 games last season where he attempted seven or more 3-pointers. During these games, the Clippers posted a 21-9 record, while Redick converted at a 39.5 percent clip from downtown. Notably, Redick was a +249 overall while on the floor over these 30 games.
Being able to maintain a high level of efficiency despite the increase in volume is a credit to the work Redick has put in away from games throughout his career. Last season represented the third season in a row of eclipsing the 40.0 percent barrier from 3-point range, with his 2015-16 return of 47.5 percent being his career-best.
While in the midst of his hot shooting with the Clippers, Redick stated succinctly what his yearly goals were when it came to shooting the 3-ball:
"“I always want to shoot over 40 percent every year. I don’t think that changes.”"
With a bevy of emerging playmakers such as Ben Simmons, Markelle Fultz, and even center Joel Embiid at the Sixers’ disposal, the floor-spacing Redick is going to provide should be evident from the beginning of his career as a Sixer.
As the Sixers president of basketball operations Bryan Colangelo noted at Redick’s introductory press conference:
"“What this team needed more than anything was a shooter. We arguably have the best shooter in the league.”"

Now it’s just a matter of Redick and his new Sixers teammates jelling as a group in order to see how special this team can become.
