Miami Heat: 5 goals for guard Dion Waiters in 2017-18
By Simon Smith
4. Increase free throw percentage to at least 75 percent
Considering his propensity for attacking and driving into the heart of the defence, Waiters surprisingly does not get to the free-throw line an awful lot. Last season, he averaged just 2.8 free throw attempts per game, right on his career average of 2.7 per game.
The problem for Waiters last season was that his accuracy was far from optimal. Hitting at just a 64.6 percent clip, this conversion rate somewhat spoiled the growth in so many other areas of his game. And it was truly a confusing experience to watch as it unfolded.
For instance, take Waiters’ Jan. 21 game against the Milwaukee Bucks, which was the catalyst for his late-season surge. Scoring 33 points, Waiters shot 12-of-18 from the field (66.7 percent) and 5-of-7 from 3-point range (71.4), but managed just 4-of-8 (50 percent) from the charity stripe.
In fact, Waiters had eight games last season where he attempted five or more free throws. Despite averaging 21.8 points per game over these games, he shot at just a 62.0 percent clip from the line. With the clear growth in Waiters’ game, getting to the free throw line and hitting them at a satisfactory rate should be a clear objective heading into this season.
