Overall

The Sacramento Kings followed through on their major move at the deadline, exorcising the demons of the past and starting fresh with a completely new roster. Nine players on the 15-man roster were drafted in the last three years, eight of them in the first round. Even the veterans are new, with just Kosta Koufos (2015) and Garrett Temple (2016) signed before this summer.

It would seem that the Kings have completely embraced the youth movement, even if they stumbled in the execution with the contracts and choices for the veteran mentors. This team is loaded with young talent, and if just a few players “hit,” this team has a good chance to end its playoff drought in a few seasons.

The Kings of old would have handed out long contracts and even given up long-term assets to add short-term players. This Kings front office isn’t exactly savvy, but by comparison they are steering the ship in a much better direction. Even if their veteran signings flop, Sacramento can basically reset in two years.

They managed draft assets well, taking players that fit their culture-first ethos and would play hard on both ends of the court. There was no gross misunderstanding of draft value such as the Papagiannis selection last year, and they came away from the draft with four players to hang onto.

In total, the team now has multiple young players at nearly every position. De’Aaron Fox and Frank Mason III are long-term options at the point, while Buddy Hield, Malachi Richardson and Bogdan Bogdanovic are all excellent shooters at the 2. Justin Jackson is on the wing, Skal Labissiere and Harry Giles are at the 4, and Willie Cauley-Stein is at the 5.

This team is moving out of the period of correcting for the mistakes of the past, and this season can begin to focus solely on the future. For the first time in years there are legitimate reasons to be excited about what is ahead for this team.
