Julius Randle, PF

How the 2017-18 season goes could have an irreversible effect on the course of Julius Randle’s career.

With restricted free agency on the horizon for the former No. 7 overall pick, the Lakers have a difficult decision to make. On one hand, they can choose to re-sign Randle, using his Bird Rights to give him a significant raise while still rolling out their plan to sign two superstars in 2018.

On the other hand, the Lakers could decide to part ways with him — one way or another. If the right offer came along, Los Angeles may find a way recoup assets by trading Randle. Or maybe they simply decide to let him walk via free agency, especially with the potential for him to get overpaid via an restricted free agency offer sheet.

In the end though, the Lakers’ final decision may come down to how he plays. Can he show improved range and rim protection abilities, allowing him to fit more of the mold of today’s power forward? Or will his inconsistency and old-school style of play make Los Angeles look elsewhere for their starting 4?

There are so many different routes the Lakers could take in determining Randle’s future. While I believe a trade seems the most likely option, a strong showing this season alongside an upgraded supporting cast could help the former Wildcat stay in Los Angeles for the foreseeable future.
