5. Stephon Marbury  (PG) — No. 4 pick in 1996 NBA Draft

Career stats (with the Timberwolves):  167 GP, 16.9 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 8.3 APG, 41.1 FG%, 72.9 FT%

The Minnesota Timberwolves didn’t directly draft Stephon Marbury during the 1996 NBA Draft. They took Ray Allen (fifth overall pick) and traded him for Stephon Marbury (fourth overall pick).

With how Marbury ended up leaving Minnesota, this is a trade the Timberwolves will forever regret, especially after how great Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett were when they eventually teamed up in Boston.

However, Marbury still had an excellent NBA career and was productive during his three seasons with the Timberwolves. He averaged 16.9 points, 8.3 assists and 2.9 rebounds per game. Despite a promising start and being paired with Kevin Garnett, Marbury was not set on staying in Minnesota.

If the Timberwolves had kept Ray Allen, they would have had a good duo that got along. They more than likely would have won an NBA championship. Marbury ultimately went on play for seven other teams during his NBA career, making two All-Star appearances during that time. Even though he left early, he was one of the best players to ever play for the Minnesota Timberwolves.
